We are excited to offer "Beyond the Bet," a focused, 10-week intensive group program designed specifically for individuals overcoming problem gambling. This structured workshop provides the essential tools, accountability, and peer support needed to break the cycle of gambling addiction. To maximize your recovery and clinical support, we recommend weekly individual sessions to go along with the groups.

Arkham Rise Counseling, LLC is proud to present Beyond the Bet, an evidence-based, 10-week intensive outpatient group therapy program specifically engineered for individuals seeking freedom from problem gambling. As a specialized outpatient service, this structured clinical program allows participants to receive high-level treatment while continuing to fulfill their personal, professional, and family obligations. It provides the essential therapeutic tools, structured accountability, and peer community required to interrupt compulsive behaviors, break the cycle of addiction, and construct a grounded, sustainable future.

Program Foundations

The Intensive Outpatient Cohort Model

Our program utilizes an intensive outpatient, closed cohort model, capping enrollment at a maximum of 8 participants per group.

Unlike open drop-in support groups, once the 10-week cycle begins, no new members are admitted. This closed format ensures a secure, highly confidential environment where participants can build authentic mutual trust, process challenges vulnerably, and maintain momentum without mid-program disruptions—all while applying recovery skills to their real-world environment between weekly sessions.

Candidate Profile

This program is designed for adults struggling with compulsive betting across any medium—including sports wagering platforms, casino gaming, lottery, card games, or online speculation. If gambling has begun to compromise your financial security, strain meaningful relationships, or degrade your mental well-being, this outpatient program provides a structured, accessible pathway forward.

Therapeutic Outcomes

Taking the initial step toward recovery requires profound courage. Participants transition from feelings of isolation, shame, and loss of agency into a state of empowerment, clarity, and emotional stability. You will leave the program supported by a compassionate clinical community and equipped with a personalized, actionable blueprint for long-term recovery in your daily life.

Understanding Gambling Disorder: A Clinical Perspective

The Neurobiology of Gambling Addiction

Gambling disorder is a formally recognized clinical mental health condition and impulse-control disorder—not a personal defect or failure of willpower.

Clinically, gambling activates the brain's neurochemical reward pathways in a manner identical to substance use disorders. Placing a wager triggers a surge of dopamine associated with risk and anticipation. Over time, neurological tolerance develops, compelling the individual to take increasingly higher financial risks to achieve the same baseline emotional threshold.

Addressing Co-Occurring Conditions

Compulsive gambling rarely manifests in isolation. Underlying psychological factors—such as generalized anxiety, major depressive disorder, unresolved trauma, or ADHD—frequently act as subtle drivers, fueling the impulse to seek escape or dopamine stimulation through wagering.

Sustained recovery requires treating the whole person. By addressing underlying mental health factors alongside behavioral patterns, our outpatient care model mitigates core relapse vulnerabilities.

Primary Clinical Indicators

Problem gambling often develops covertly. Key diagnostic indicators include:

  • Cognitive Preoccupation: Persistent fixation on past betting outcomes or strategic planning for future wagers.
  • Tolerance Escalation: The necessity to risk increasing amounts of capital to achieve desired emotional relief or excitement.
  • Chasing Losses: Urgent returning to gambling activities in an attempt to recoup financial losses.
  • Withdrawal Dynamics: Restlessness, irritability, or heightened anxiety when attempting to reduce or cease gambling.
  • Interpersonal Deception: Concealing the extent of gambling activities or financial loss from loved ones and clinicians.
  • Experiential Avoidance: Utilizing gambling as a coping mechanism to escape emotional distress, anxiety, or depressive symptoms.
  • Financial Bailouts: Reliance on external financial intervention to alleviate critical liabilities caused by gambling.

Systemic Impact & The Ripple Effect

Gambling disorder is a widespread public health issue affecting an estimated 1.2% of the global adult population.

Because addiction is a systemic condition, its impact extends beyond the individual. Research indicates that for every person struggling with a gambling disorder, an average of six loved ones experience direct emotional, financial, or psychological harm. Rebuilding systemic trust and household stability is a foundational focus of our clinical approach.

Integrative Treatment Model

Medication-Management Integration

While cognitive-behavioral and group modalities form the cornerstone of recovery, psychiatric medication management offers valuable physiological support. Because gambling alters brain chemistry, restoring neurochemical balance can significantly reduce clinical distress.

While no single medication carries a sole FDA indication for gambling disorder, psychiatric clinicians frequently utilize effective off-label protocols, including:

  • Opioid Antagonists (e.g., Naltrexone): Attenuates the neurochemical reward response, effectively dampening the "high" associated with gambling and curbing severe physical cravings.
  • SSRIs & Mood Stabilizers: Modulates underlying depression, anxiety, or emotional dysregulation that frequently triggers compulsive behaviors.

Supplemental Outpatient Individual Therapy

To maximize clinical outcomes, individual therapy is strongly recommended alongside cohort participation. One-on-one sessions allow you to explore personal history, safely process root trauma, and tailor group curriculum concepts directly to your unique life circumstances.

Note: Individual counseling and psychiatric medication management are separate clinical outpatient services provided through Arkham Rise Counseling, LLC, and can be coordinated independently of the group program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Program & Logistics

What is a "Cohort" model, and why is the group closed?

A cohort model means a small group of up to 8 participants starts and completes the 10-week program together. We do not allow new members to join midway through. This closed structure ensures maximum privacy, builds deep trust among peers, and creates a safe environment where everyone progresses together without weekly disruptions.

When and where do the group sessions meet?

Sessions run for 90 minutes once per week for 10 consecutive weeks. All group sessions are held in person at our practice location: 314 N Kentucky Ave, Lakeland, FL 33801.

  • Cohort A: Thursdays | 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Cohort B: Saturdays | 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM

What happens if I have to miss a session?

Because accountability is a core component of recovery—and to keep the cohort dynamic strong—we ask for a full commitment to all 10 weeks. However, if an emergency arises, you will coordinate directly with the facilitator, Kyle Lidge, LMHC, to complete a catch-up review so you don't fall behind on the curriculum.

What if I gamble or relapse while in the program?

Relapse or urges are viewed as clinical information, not a failure. You will not be kicked out of the group for struggling. The cohort is designed to be a safe, honest environment where we dissect triggers, adjust coping strategies, and help you regain momentum immediately.

Why is an intensive outpatient group model effective for gambling recovery?

Gambling addiction is shaped by real-world, everyday triggers: paydays, mobile apps, sports broadcasts, and financial stress. An intensive outpatient cohort allows you to learn evidence-based skills and immediately apply them in your actual daily life, receiving real-time group feedback and clinical support each week.

Pricing, Deposit & Insurance

Why is there a $200 accountability deposit, and how do I get it back?

The $200 deposit is an investment in your own commitment. Our primary goal is your active engagement and program completion—not taking your money. Your $200 deposit is 100% fully refunded upon attending and completing all 10 weeks of the program. The only non-refundable cost is a one-time $50 administration and materials fee.

Do you accept health insurance for the group program?

Insurance is not accepted for the 10-week "Beyond the Bet" group program. However, if you choose to add optional individual therapy or medication management alongside the group, those separate clinical services may be billed through health insurance or eligible for out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your provider and coverage.

What forms of payment do you accept for the admin fee and deposit?

We accept all major credit cards, debit cards, and HSA/FSA (Health Savings Account / Flexible Savings Account) cards.

Clinical Approach & Treatment

Is gambling really considered a true addiction if no drugs or alcohol are involved?

Yes. The American Psychiatric Association classifies gambling disorder in the DSM-5 as a behavioral addiction under Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders. Brain imaging shows that compulsive gambling activates the exact same neurochemical dopamine and reward pathways as substance use disorders.

Do I need a substance abuse diagnosis to join this program?

No. "Beyond the Bet" treats gambling disorder as a primary mental health concern. Whether you struggle solely with gambling or experience co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, or ADHD, our curriculum is tailored to address the root cognitive and behavioral cycles driving your gambling.

How is this different from Gamblers Anonymous (GA) or self-help groups?

While peer support groups like GA are invaluable resources, "Beyond the Bet" is a clinician-led, evidence-based treatment program. Facilitated by a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in addiction, it delivers a structured 10-week clinical curriculum utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to actively rewire addictive neural pathways and target underlying root causes.

What types of gambling does this program cover?

This program addresses all forms of problem gambling. Whether you struggle with sports betting apps, casino table games, slot machines, horse racing, lottery/scratch-offs, day trading, or crypto speculation, the underlying neurological and emotional drivers are identical, and the recovery tools apply equally.

Am I required to do individual therapy or medication management?

No, individual counseling and psychiatric medication management are completely optional. However, because gambling addiction frequently co-occurs with anxiety, depression, trauma, or ADHD, combining group work with individual care or medication management significantly increases long-term recovery success.

How does medication help with gambling addiction if there isn't a specific "gambling pill"?

While there is no single medication specifically created for gambling, psychiatric providers frequently use proven off-label medications. For example, opioid antagonists (like Naltrexone) block the brain's reward system, which dulls the "rush" or high of placing a bet and significantly reduces intense cravings. SSRIs and mood stabilizers can also treat the underlying depression or impulsivity that triggers gambling behaviors.

Privacy, Stigma & Family Support

Is my participation completely confidential?

Yes, 100%. Confidentiality is legally and ethically protected under HIPAA. All group members sign a strict confidentiality agreement prior to Session 1 agreeing that everything shared within the room stays within the room.

What if I know someone in the group or run into someone I know?

Due to our small group cap (maximum 8 participants), we conduct a pre-screening before Cohort Session 1. If a dual relationship or conflict of interest arises between participants, we will discreetly transition you to an alternate cohort time or offer an individualized care plan.

Can family members or spouses attend the group sessions with me?

The 10-week cohort sessions are strictly reserved for the participants working through the recovery curriculum. However, because addiction impacts the entire family unit, we offer separate family & couples counseling sessions at Arkham Rise Counseling to help loved ones rebuild trust, set financial boundaries, and heal from the ripple effects of problem gambling.

Getting Started & Next Steps

I’m not sure if my gambling is "bad enough" for an intensive program. How do I know?

If gambling causes you stress, leads to secret-keeping, creates financial strain, or feels difficult to stop despite wanting to—it is time for support. You do not need to hit "rock bottom" or be in financial ruin to benefit from this program. Early intervention prevents long-term devastation.

How do I lock in my spot for the upcoming cohort?
